The problem with “should” (especially if you have ADHD)

How many times today have you told yourself you should be doing something?

“I should answer that email.”
“I should clean the kitchen.”
“I should be more productive, organized, on top of my life, [insert unrealistic expectation here]...”

Yeah. Been there. Like, yesterday.

And also 10 minutes ago.

And as I was writing this sentence.

Here’s the thing no one tells you:

For ADHD brains, “should” isn’t just unhelpful — it’s often just bullshit. It comes loaded with guilt, pressure, and the idea that we’re somehow failing at being adults just because we don’t operate like neurotypical people (or robots).

That’s why this week’s episode of ADHD Adult(ish) is all about kicking “should” to the curb.

🎧 In Stop 'Should-ing' Yourself: Why ADHD and 'Should' Don’t Mix, we’ll dive into:

  • Why “should” statements mess with our motivation and self-worth
  • How to question the “shoulds” and replace them with something way more empowering
  • A few “shoulds” that are actually kind and worth keeping (yes, they exist!)

🎙️Listen now or watch it on Youtube.

Quick reminder before I sign off:

You don’t need to earn rest.
You don’t need to do things the “normal” way.
You definitely don’t need another “should” on your plate.

You're already doing better than you think.

Cheers,
Kim

The Weekly Level Up Let's level up our ADHD lives a little, shall we? If you have ADHD — or you’re raising a tiny ADHD human — you already know that multi-step instructions are the enemy. You tell your kid, “Go brush your teeth, put on your shoes, and grab your backpack.” And what happens? They run off to do the thing. Their brain only processes step one. Five minutes later, they’re standing in the kitchen holding their toothbrush, looking confused. Been there. So, here’s what I've been doing...

The Weekly Level Up Let's level up our ADHD lives a little, shall we? Here's something I wish someone had told me years ago: Joy is not something you have to earn. Not with productivity. Not with a clean house. Not with a cleared inbox or a perfectly executed morning routine. But when you live with ADHD, it can feel like joy needs to be deserved. Like you haven’t done “enough” to earn the right to relax. Like fun, rest, or even a snack you enjoy has to be withheld until you’ve suffered your...

The Weekly Level Up Let's level up our ADHD lives a little, shall we? Are you exhausted all day ... only to find yourself wide awake the second your head hits the pillow at night? And your brain? Oh, it’s fired up and ready to rock. Thoughts start racing. Energy spikes out of nowhere. You remember you never responded to that email from two weeks ago and also, did you remember to lock the front door? And why do you have "Two Tickets to Paradise" stuck in your head? If that sounds familiar,...
